FREEDOM!
A colleague just mentioned this famous quote from Braveheart and I remembered this funny story.
When I went to Scotland with two friends in 2000, we also went to see Stirling Castle. That's were an important battle between William Wallace and the English took place, which is depicted in Braveheart.
Now the local town council thought it'd be a good idea to commemorate this historic event by putting up a stone statue of .... Mel Gibson, an Australian Actor, playing a Scottish folk hero, shouting FREEDOM!. That of course didn't go well with the local population and the statue was target of multiple attacks with Paint and the like.
Now every night at 5pm the statue gets locked into a cage, for it's own protection. So much for FREEEDOM!
Don't believe me? Click the link to the picture. I guess now that Mel has shown his racist side, the thing will stay locked all day long....

Musical Abilities Test
Test your musical abilities on this page:
Click the image to take the 6 Min Flash test or go to Jake Mandell's Blog for more info.
Actually, I took the test a second time with headphones on and got 91.7% - of course it's easier, when you do it again, but headphones help too!
Update: Jake added a survey to the page, where people can submit their results. Check it out. Of course the people, who did well are much more prone to submit their results ;)

Toys Music Licensing Issues
What do you do, when you want to create a cool musical Baby Toy, but you don't want to cut your profits by getting the license to use a real song?
This is my son's toy guitar. It plays "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley and his Comets - Well almost. It's more like "One, Two, Three o', Four o'clock". So it seems they cut so many words out of the real song that they don't have to pay any license.

I failed the Da Vinci Code Quest
I was pretty happy, when I came in as one of the first 10,000 people solving the Da Vinci Code Puzzle on Google. But when the finals started, I realized, I might have just been lucky.
I had seen other people's times of being about 30min. So after 45min on just the first part of five I gave up:
After about 10 tries and two hours, I managed to finish number one, but number two proved to be no easier:
But at least I got the cool cryptex ;)

Da Vinci Code Cryptex
Just got my Cryptex in the mail - I'm one of the lucky 10,000 solving the Google Da Vinci Code Challenge first.
It is remarkably heavy and contains a little scroll, telling you to visit www.google.com/DaVinciCode. The site also has a link to a little documentary about the movie and some sponsor's messages and discounts.
Damn! Some people are paying 80$ for one of these at ebay (I see 47 auctions at the moment). Make me an offer I can't decline and you can have mine!
I'm excited about the next challenge, which will commence 1pm EDT May 19th. This time, the fastest players that complete the game during two days, will win. Luckily, I played a lot of NotPr0n - The Hardest Riddle Available on the Internet, so I hope I stand a little chance ;)
Update: There goes my feeling special: About 600 other bloggers ramble about the same topic....
Yeah and some asshole on ebay wants to sell the links I gave you above for 5$. Disgusting!

Pandora opens her music box
Have you tried Pandora, yet? You'll tell them one or more of your favourite artists or songs and they'll play music with similar features. This is not only a good way of having a radiostation that plays the music you like, but it also helps you discover new artists and songs.
Initially this was supposed to be a payed service, but now thay moved into an ad-supported model - you can still pay to get rid of the ads. Check it out!
