Maraschino Cherry
Do you like those red cocktail cherries? I always hated them and now I know why:
They are so nice and red, because they are colored with Carmine, which is the juice of crushed femal bugs. I knew they used that stuff in Lipsticks, but it's also used in a lot of other foods. See the Seattle Times article for all the appalling details.

Zur Gewinnung der Farbe werden die Läuse getrocknet und in Wasser unter Zusatz von etwas Schwefelsäure ausgekocht. Das Karmesin wird dann unter Anwendung von Alaun und etwas Kalk ausgefällt, ausgewaschen und getrocknet. Na dann Mahlzeit!

Das zeigt mal wieder: Man kann durchaus zu viel wissen. Es ging mir einfach besser, als ich das noch nicht wusste, oder wie der gemeine Ami sagt:
