I'm sure we are all looking to MSN Hotmail to tell us how we can help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. So, I'm doing my very best here:
Well, after you sent an email from Hotmail's Webinterface, you'll see the following helpful message:

Google saves lifes

I guess I can't imagine to be on the internet without Google any more. But other people have been even more influenced! Read this entry from the official Google Blog for a story, where Google might have saved a live.

UPDATE: Now there even is a child named Google! As a middle name.... very cute kid. I wonder if the name turns into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Worst Case Scenario

OK, I should know better, but let me spell it out again: B-A-C-K-U-P, backup, backup, backup!
Yesterday, I plugged my external Harddrive into my computer and no data was to be seen. The partition was still there, but it didn't seem to be formatted.

Not yet panicking, I booted up Linux, but the same picture presented itself. This drive contains all my digital pictures and my music library. Sure I did make a backup, but that was quite a while ago. I'd cry if I lost all that.

I started looking for a data recovery product and found Ontrack EasyRecovery™. This program was able to find all my data after a 4h search. Unfortunately it couldn't just fix the FAT, so I had to make room for all the 100+GB on my other drive. So after another 5h of data transfer, I had my data back and could start formatting my external drive anew. This time I'm using NTFS and hope that this doesn't get as easily corrupted as the FAT32 partition did. The formatting took another 3 hours and copying back the data yet another 3h. So just a couple of corrupted bits in the file allocation table of my drive cost me 15h to restore the data.

What to do to prevent this? Sure, backup is the best answer - but backing up 150GB is not easy. That's 10 DVDs! And one question I have is: Would this have happened with Linux, too?

How to tell the kids

If you ever wondered how to tell your kids of the harsh security measures going on since 9/11, go get some playmobil! They have a security checkpoint for kids to play with! First, read this customer review, though.

Marco's kSolo Forum

Largely because I have so much fun at kSolo.com and because I feel the need to discuss some of it with other people, I created a forum:
Marco's kSolo Forum

I'm curious if anybody will visit that page at all, but I have to try ;)

By the way, I set up this Forum using

phpBB 2

It was very painless and offers all the functionality you expect from a forum :)
Thank you Open-Source developers!

If you really wanna hear me sing, see this older entry....you have been warned ;)

Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo

I really like the Bloodhound Gang.
Not that their music is really my style, but the lyrics are so funny and every time I listen to a song I understand another rascality. So basically I'm in it for the English-challenge ;)
